Second Largest Auto Recall – 52 Million Airbag Inflators To Be Recalled

RECALL!  NHTSA is preparing to recall approximately 52 million automobile airbag inflators that can rupture during deployment, potentially injuring or killing passengers.  According to reports, NHTSA started its investigation in 2015 and discovered that inflators manufactured by ARC Automotive and Delphi Automotive Systems explode with excess pressure shooting shrapnel into the front seat occupants.  Since 2014, there have been seven such incidents in the U.S., with one of those resulting in the death of the driver and the others resulting in severe facial lacerations and injuries.  General Motors, BMW, and Volkswagen have already issued a recall for this particular defect.  Additional manufacturers that may be included in the recall include Fiat Chrysler, Ford, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Kia, Hyundai, Tesla and Toyota.  As the investigation continues, it is possible the list of impacted vehicles will grow.

All vehicle owners should be on the lookout for notices from your vehicle’s manufacturer in the upcoming year.  Additionally, you can always review any recalls for your vehicle using NHTSA’s recall search tool here.
