RECALL! Philips Recalls Sleep Apnea Machines

As of June 14, Philips issued a recall of millions of its ventilator devices used to help treat obstructive sleep apnea.  The recall includes the Philips Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (Bi-Level PAP) and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) devices, mostly from the DreamStation (1st Gen.) product line.  The reason for the recall is a defect related to foam that is used in these devices to help dampen sound. The foam can degrade and breakdown putting users at risk of exposure to dangerous particulates and chemical off-gassing that in turn can lead to cancer and other health issues. While Philips states it is working on a replacement for the foam, users of the Philips machines are advised to consult with their physicians and consider replacing the defective machines. The recalled products have been widely used and available for several years, and despite only just issuing the recall, it is believed Philips knew of the defect and associated health risks for many years. A class action suit was recently filed against Philips as was another lawsuit alleging that one of its machines resulted in an individual developing lung cancer. In issuing the recall, there is no question that there is a dangerous defect with these machines.  However, some additional questions remain, including, how long Philips knew about the defect and why wasn’t more done sooner? It has been CKF’s experience in handling these types of cases that often manufacturers know of the defect but remain silent in the name of profits.
