The Dangers of Brain and Spine Injuries in Children

img_testimonial_2_2-498x225A few weeks ago, two children riding their bikes were struck by a vehicle in Atlanta, resulting in serious brain and spine injuries to one of the children. Unfortunately, that child did not make it. The driver of the vehicle faces many charges, including a DUI, but it is too late for the 9-year-old who lost  his life from this incident.

Brain and spinal injuries are devastating to anyone, but they are particularly dangerous in children. There are some injuries adults are able to overcome that a child cannot.

Brain and Spine Injuries Can be Devastating to Children

The Brain Injury Association (BIA) cautions that children are most at risk for traumatic brain injury, a leading cause of death and disability, between the ages of 0-4 and 15-19. Among children aged 0-19, an average of 62,000 children sustain serious injuries from car accidents, sports injuries, falls, and other causes each year. In addition, approximately 2,685 children under 14 will die from a traumatic brain injury this year.

While spinal cord injuries in children are not as frequent, the National Institutes of Health warns there are significant consequences for children who sustain these injuries. In accidents such as the one that led to the death of a 9-year-old, these injuries are dangerous, and together they are often fatal.

Taking Injuries in Children Seriously

Most people know how serious injuries in children are, but they may unknowingly be putting their children and other children at risk. Every now and then, look into the latest safety and injury prevention methods for children. If they take out their bike, make sure they wear their helmet. It is the little things that can help prevent possibly fatal injuries, though safety precautions cannot prevent all injuries.

In the event of a potential brain or spine injury to your child, take them to a hospital or doctor right away, even if you think you might be overreacting. Even if the injuries do not seem serious, it is important to get a professional medical opinion sooner rather than later. Symptoms of brain injury and concussion may not be evident early on, but can be very dangerous if left untreated. This is particularly important, if you did not witness the injury since you are unable to determine the circumstances around it.

Injuries happen, and with prompt medical care, the chances are better your child will recover. Because of the nature of brain and spine injuries, the next step after any accident involving your child’s brain or spine injury is to seek legal guidance from an experienced injury attorney right away.
