UPDATE: Chrysler Agrees to Recall

Earlier this month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a recommendation to the Chrysler Group LLC to recall Jeep Grand Cherokees in model years 1993 – 2004 and Libertys in model years 2002 – 2007. The organization counseled Chrysler after its investigations revealed that a rear crash on these vehicles could puncture the fuel tank, located in the rear of the models, and potentially cause a fire. The NHTSA determined that there have been numerous fatal rear-impact fire crashes involving Grand Cherokees and Libertys.

Chrysler had originally disagreed with NHTSA’s recommendation, stating the vehicles were not defective and “among the safest in the peer group.” The decision to recall was announced Tuesday, June 18, as the automaker “came to recognize it might be able to win [the battle in court against the NHTS], yet could still lose in the court of public opinion.”
