Grandmother Injured in New Jersey Elevator Accident

A grandmother in her 70s is lucky to be alive after an elevator accident at a New Jersey apartment building. According to news reports, the woman opened the door for the elevator and stepped inside only to plunge down the shaft as her young granddaughter watched. Other residents rushed to help and fire rescue were able to get her out, rushing her to the hospital with serious injuries.  At this time, it is unclear what malfunctioned with the elevator but residents had reported to management about problems with the elevator prior to this tragic incident.  While authorities are investigating, what is clear is this should have never happened.  When an elevator car is not present at a floor, the exterior door for that floor should remain locked preventing access to the elevator shaft – to avoid falls exactly like this.

If an elevator is properly designed, manufactured, installed, and maintained, incidents like this should never happen and was likely due to someone’s negligence. Often, incidents like these are the result of improper installation or maintenance where the company who either installed or serviced the elevator negligently disables important safety features. Wherever the failure occurred, those who are responsible need to be held accountable.

It truly is a miracle that the woman survived this terrifying incident.
